Typographical Association, Limerick Branch, Addresses Outsourcing Concerns

In a special assembly uniting employers of the city and the committee of the Typographical Association, Limerick Branch, convened at the Mechanics’ Institute, an imperative issue was discussed and resolved upon. Held within the Town Hall, the proceedings led to the unanimous passing of a resolution bearing the collective sentiments of those present.

The resolution underscored a shared concern among representatives of printing firms and working printers within the city. They expressed deep regret over the significant amount of printing work for local establishments that was being outsourced outside the confines of Limerick. The sentiment expressed was that this work could just as easily, economically, and efficiently be conducted within the city itself.

A resounding message was directed towards those who favored external labour at the cost of local expertise. The resolution asserted that local printers were entirely capable of performing the work with the same level of cost-effectiveness, promptness, and quality exhibited by their competing counterparts. They called upon the local traders to prioritize city-based printers, who not only had the capacity but also the vested interest in contributing to the city’s economic circulation.

The association pointed out the consequences of choosing outside sources over local talent. They highlighted the significant impact this had on the local workforce, leading to reduced consistent employment opportunities and diminished financial resources. By advocating for the preference of city-based printers, they emphasized that the local economy would be enriched, preventing the outflow of finances to regions that did not reciprocate the economic flow.

The resolution, representative of the collective stance, was endorsed and supported by James O’Halloran, President of the association, and John Christie, Secretary of the same. The document served as a call to action, urging a redirection of patronage and support towards the city’s own printers.

The following establishments were recognized for their fairness in supporting the city’s local printers:

  • Messrs H & E Ashe
  • Limerick Chronicle
  • Messrs Goy & Co.
  • Limerick Echo
  • Mess Kirsy
  • Limerick Leader
  • Messrs McKery & Sons
  • Munster News
  • Messes O’Conyor & Co

With this resolution, the Typographical Association, Limerick Branch, presented a united front to address a pressing issue affecting the local printing industry. The assembly’s message was clear: embrace the potential and capability within the city, and support local endeavours that sustain the economic vitality of Limerick.
