A Gallant County Limerick man Honored by the Royal Humane Society

In a demonstration of exceptional bravery, Michael Guiry, a carpenter from Knockaderry in County Limerick, has been honoured with a bronze medal by the Royal Humane Society for his courageous actions on May 14th, under perilous circumstances.

The incident unfolded when two men, identified as Sullivan and Moran, were working on a well, which had reached a staggering depth of over 60 feet. They had placed a charge of dynamite for blasting within the well and subsequently ascended to the surface, hoping for a controlled detonation. Unfortunately, the charge failed to explode as intended.

Realizing that something had gone awry, Sullivan and Moran decided to re-enter the well to investigate the issue. The well, at its upper opening, was a mere eight feet in diameter. Tragically, the charge eventually detonated, causing severe injuries to both men.

In this dire situation, Michael Guiry displayed exceptional valour. Ignoring the inherent danger and the risk of a further explosion, he made the selfless decision to be lowered down into the well. This daring rescue attempt was made possible through the use of an old and fragile rope, all while being surrounded by the suffocating smoke resulting from the blast.

With unwavering determination and a deep sense of duty, Michael Guiry managed to reach Sullivan and Moran, who were undoubtedly in critical condition. He successfully secured and sent both men up to the surface, saving their lives from the perilous depths below.

Tragically, despite the heroic efforts of Guiry, one of the rescued individuals passed away eight days later as a result of the injuries sustained during the explosion. Nonetheless, Guiry’s gallantry and selflessness in the face of extreme danger exemplify the highest standards of bravery and humanity.

The Royal Humane Society’s decision to award Michael Guiry a bronze medal serves as a testament to his exceptional courage and his willingness to risk his life to save others. His actions have undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the community and are a source of inspiration for all.
