City Tenants’ Association Gains Momentum with Formation of Ward Committees

In a noteworthy development for the Limerick City Tenants’ Association, a significant meeting was held in the Council chamber of the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The meeting marked a pivotal moment for the association as it aimed to extend its presence and influence throughout the city. This gathering was the first of several ward meetings planned as part of a broader strategy discussed during the general meeting held on the 8th of the month.

The key objective of these ward meetings was to establish Ward Committees in order to more effectively expand the organization’s reach across the entire city. Chaired by Mr P.E. Dourke, J.P., the meeting included notable attendees such as Joseph O’Malley (treasurer), P. Molloy (secretary), and P. O’Mara (assistant secretary).

Representatives from the Abbey Ward included individuals like P. Meagher, M. Clancy, T. O’Donoghue, S. Richardson, D. O’Connell, Edward U. Connor, M. O’Connor, P. Ryan, P. Madden, M. Ryan, P. Hickey, W. Cavanagh, M. Richardson, T. Sexton, J. Doran, M. Bodurin, D. O’Dwyer, T. Ryan, J. Close (junior), J. Close (senior), F. Van Eesbeck, Michael Foley, M. Kenny, J. Lynch, and many others.

Representatives from the Castle Ward included James Hassett (secretary), T. Meany (Treasurer), James Barclay, J. Duggan, F. Crump, J. O’Sullivan, J. Powell, P. Farrell, T. White, M. Pigott, T. Tobin, E. Walsh, J. Fogerty, P. O’Sullivan, J. Skehan, and more.

During the meeting, the President explained that the primary purpose was to elect key positions such as chairman, secretary, treasurer, and a small committee for each Ward. These appointed individuals would be responsible for coordinating public meetings within their respective Wards and enrolling new members.

The election results were as follows:

Abbey Ward:

  • Chairman: John Kerr, T.
  • Secretary: Patrick Hogan (President Pork Butchers)
  • Treasurer: P. O’Donoghue
  • Committee: Stephen Richardson and Daniel O’Connell

Castle Ward:

  • Chairman: John Barclay
  • Secretary: P. O’Sullivan
  • Treasurer: T. Meany, T.C.
  • Committee: James Hassett, T.C., and I. O’Farrell

It was agreed that each committee would promptly initiate the organization efforts within their respective Wards, including scheduling public meetings and conducting member enrollments. The central branch would also arrange meetings with representatives from the Customhouse Ward, Dock Ward, Glentworth Ward, Inishtown Ward, Market Ward, and Shannon Ward to further extend the organization’s reach.

The association is taking swift and determined steps to be well-prepared to articulate the housing needs of the city’s working population. This proactive approach comes ahead of the anticipated introduction of a housing bill by Mr Bryce, a bill that aims to address the housing requirements of artisans and labourers in Irish towns. The Limerick City Tenants’ Association is positioning itself to actively participate in this important discourse.
