Limerick Breach of Promise Case: Jury Rules in Favor of Plaintiff

In a significant legal proceeding that unfolded at the Rathkeale Quarter Sessions, a breach of promise of marriage case took center stage. The plaintiff, Mary Casey, aged 16 at the time and represented by her father, Patrick Casey, brought this action against the defendant, Maurice Liston, a farmer hailing from Carrydaff in the western part of County Limerick.

The crux of the plaintiff’s case rested on her assertion that, while employed by the defendant, she was enticed into a romantic relationship under the promise of marriage. Tragically, during this period, she became pregnant and subsequently gave birth to a child who, regrettably, did not survive.

In response to these allegations, the defendant vehemently denied ever making any such promise of marriage to the plaintiff.

After careful deliberation, the jury rendered their verdict, ruling in favor of the plaintiff. As a result of this decision, the defendant was ordered to pay £50 in damages.

This legal battle sheds light on the complexities and emotional toll that breach of promise cases can entail, underscoring the importance of honesty and transparency in romantic relationships.
