At a meeting held by the Limerick Corporation last evening, an interesting application was received from the secretary of the Munster-Connaught Exhibition. The application requested the loan of the municipal flag for the exhibition’s opening ceremony, which was scheduled to be inaugurated on July 1st by the Lord-Lieutenant.
However, a noteworthy debate ensued during the meeting regarding the appropriate figurehead for inaugurating the exhibition. Alderman Daly took a strong stance against the application, arguing that the exhibition should be opened by the High Sheriff rather than a representative of England’s King.
The debate came to a vote, with 14 members of the Corporation in favor of granting the application and 3 opposed to it. Ultimately, the Corporation decided to loan the municipal flag for the exhibition’s opening ceremony.
This decision reflects the diversity of opinions within the Corporation regarding the appropriate dignitary to inaugurate the event, highlighting the significance attached to such symbolic gestures in the civic life of Limerick.
