Tragic Death of Policeman in Croagh

Limerick witnessed a deeply saddening incident that unfolded in a heart-wrenching manner. Constable Peter Cullinane, stationed in Croagh, found himself at the center of this exceptionally sorrowful occurrence. The details of this tragic event are as follows:

Constable Cullinane had cycled to Limerick the previous day to visit a brother-in-law residing in the townland of Clarina. In the evening, he embarked on his journey back home, choosing to take the South Circular Road for his return. The journey proceeded without incident until he reached a point opposite Littord House, the residence of Mr John F. Power.

At this juncture, an unexpected and harrowing turn of events occurred. Constable Cullinane, seemingly weakened or unwell, lost his balance and fell off his bicycle. Those present at the scene, witnessing the officer’s distress, acted promptly. Cullinane was taken into the lodge near Littord House, where immediate steps were taken to summon both a priest and a doctor.

Reverend Father O’Connor and Dr Kennedy promptly responded to the urgent call for assistance, providing immediate care and attention to the stricken constable. Subsequently, he was transported to Ballinscurra Barracks, where he remained under medical supervision throughout the night.

However, the situation took a tragic turn. Early in the morning, at around 5 o’clock, Constable Cullinane, seemingly recovering and intending to continue his journey homeward, was suddenly seized by a severe and fatal ailment. In a matter of minutes, he succumbed to this unforeseen medical emergency.

Upon his passing, the body of Constable Cullinane was examined by Dr Shanahan, who joined Dr Kennedy in providing medical care. Following his death, a post-mortem examination was conducted at the direction of Coroner M.K. Clery from the Hospital area.

To shed light on the circumstances surrounding Constable Cullinane’s tragic death, an inquest was convened by Coroner Clery. The inquest, held at 3:15 pm on the same day, aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the events leading to this devastating loss.

Constable Peter Cullinane, a native of County Clare, was approximately 44 years old and had dedicated 24 years of his life to serving in the police force. He leaves behind a grieving widow and family. The community is united in extending its deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, who are grappling with the sudden and profound sorrow brought about by this tragic incident.
