In a case brought before the Police Court, a man identifying himself as George Hayes faced charges of being involved in the theft of £1 from a sailor named Dorman. Mr Hickson, B, and the Mayor presided over the proceedings.
According to the information presented, Hayes and two women, along with three others, spent the night in a haystack at Corkanree on Sunday. During their stay, Hayes convinced a young member of their group to surreptitiously remove a sovereign from Dorman’s pocket. Hayes then swiftly snatched the money.
Hayes came to Limerick after stowing away on a ship from Plymouth. However, his night out took an expensive turn when he was arrested by the Boherbuoy police for drunkenness. Upon hearing about the alleged theft, Sergeant Beckett arrested him on the more serious charge of larceny.
Hayes was remanded to a future hearing at Petty Sessions, where his fate in this case would be determined.
