Exhibition Spotlights Limerick Lace in a Range of Styles

A recent exhibition at Messrs. Waring and Giltow’s new premises on Oxford Street, London, has showcased the exceptional beauty of Limerick lace and its adaptability in contemporary fashion. The exhibition, featuring Limerick lace and various other lace styles, presents a wide array of pieces, from modest collars and cuffs priced at half a crown to elabourate gowns in the finest Youghal point, costing three hundred and fifty guineas. The showcased items include collars, berthes, flounces, and plastrons in different types of Limerick lace and Carrickmacross, along with examples of bolder crochet laces combined with Clones baby lace and intricate designs reminiscent of Venetian point from Inishmacsaiht.

The collection also features a ten-guinea berthe from Inisnmacsaint, suitable as a charming Christmas present, along with other fine Limerick lace specimens suitable for various occasions. Noteworthy pieces include long straight shoulder scarves in Limerick and Carrickmacross, complete Limerick lace boleros, shoulder-capes in Carrickmacross with double frills and collar-bands, embroidered muslin collars bordered with baby crochet, and delicate handkerchiefs with wide borders in Carrickmacross or Youghal point. The exhibition serves not only as a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of Limerick’s artisans but also as an opportunity for those interested in supporting home industries.
