Nationalist Intolerance in Limerick

To the Editor of The Daily Express,

Sir,

During the recent election contest in South County Dublin, Mr Redmond and his party lauded the supposed harmonious relationship between his followers and the Unionist minority in the Southern counties. Mr Redmond claimed that Protestants were financially better off than Catholics, mainly due to the support of Catholics themselves. However, I believe Mr Redmond may not have conveyed the exact truth, as the current commercial success of many Protestant firms is more likely a result of their tact and integrity.

Returning to the question of tolerance, I would like to draw attention to a telegram published in some Dublin papers, signed by the Mayor and others of Limerick. In it, they repudiate the statements made by Mr D. M. Wilson, K.C., claiming that the minority in Limerick were unable to secure any positions under the local Corporation or Poor Law authorities. As someone who has resided in Limerick for many years, I can wholeheartedly support Mr Wilson’s remarks. To substantiate this, one only needs to examine the list of officials appointed to these Boards, where not a single Protestant is employed.

While it is touted that the current High Sheriff is a Protestant, it is crucial to note the actual reason behind this appointment—a detail conveniently omitted by those making the claim. The reality is that this office is occupied by a Protestant due to the strong arm of British law, providing protection that would not be guaranteed under a Home Rule administration.

I implore Mr Redmond to clarify his party’s stance on what many deem as the persecution of Jews in Limerick a few years ago. Or the disgraceful boycotting of a certain medical professional engaged in charitable work, offering his expertise free of charge to the suffering and needy poor.

Yours sincerely,

J.L.
