TENSE CONFRONTATION AT CORPORATION MEETING

In a surprising turn of events at the recent Limerick Corporation meeting, an extraordinary scene unfolded between Alderman Donnellan and Councillor Long-Sheriff. The Mayor, Councillor T. Ryan, presided over the meeting that witnessed heated exchanges between the two figures.

Alderman Donnellan initiated the clash, questioning Councillor Long about previous remarks wherein the latter allegedly stated that he would not attend Council meetings while Alderman Donnellan was Mayor. The Alderman sought an explanation or an apology for this perceived affront. The dispute harkened back to a previous Council meeting when Councillor Long left abruptly without offering any apologies, according to Alderman Donnellan.

Councillor M. O’Brien and others questioned the relevance of the exchange to the Council’s proceedings, while Alderman Donnellan continued, accusing Councillor Long of making “unfounded statements” and using the term “libel.” The Mayor intervened, urging a decorous conduct of the meeting.

The exchange intensified, with Alderman Donnellan persisting in his accusations of “unfounded discontent” and a “libel.” Councillor Long sought clarification on the alleged libellous statement and questioned the basis of the unfounded discontent claim.

Alderman Donnellan’s response included references to Councillor Long’s previous statement that he would not attend Council meetings while Alderman Donnellan was Mayor. The exchange spiralled into a contentious debate on matters unrelated to the official business of the Council.

Despite the Mayor’s efforts to restore order and decorum, the confrontation continued, highlighting a deep-seated tension between the two figures. The contentious interaction underscores the challenges faced by the Council in maintaining a focused and productive environment during its meetings.

As the meeting proceeded, the focus shifted back to the Council’s official business, but the palpable tension lingered. The unresolved dispute between Alderman Donnellan and Councillor Long adds a layer of complexity to the political dynamics within the Limerick Corporation, leaving questions about the potential impact on future proceedings.
