In Memoriam: Revered Jesuit Scholar Passes Away in Limerick

Charles McKenna, S.J., Remembered for Intellectual Legacy and Kind Disposition

Limerick, Ireland – In a sombre turn of events, the ecclesiastical community mourns the passing of the esteemed Jesuit scholar, Reverend Charles McKenna, S.J., aged 51. The great mind behind the spiritual teachings met his demise at Mungret College in Limerick yesterday, leaving behind a void in the hearts of those who knew him.

Hailing from Donhagh, Co. Monaghan, Father McKenna’s journey in the Society of Jesus commenced post-ordination at Maynooth College. His scholarly pursuits were marked by a distinguished academic career, contributing significantly to the intellectual tapestry of Ireland. For years, he traversed the ecclesiastical landscape, leaving an indelible mark through his missionary endeavours in places like Killaloe and Galway.

The late Jesuit was not merely revered for his profound theological acumen but also cherished for his amiable demeanour. Colleagues and acquaintances remember him as a gentle soul, and his benevolent spirit left an enduring impact on the community he served. His demise is met with an outpouring of sorrow, as his contributions to theological discourse and compassionate presence will be sorely missed.

Father McKenna’s health began to wane some two years ago, prompting his retreat to Mungret. The community, aware of his declining strength, extended their support. Despite their efforts, the relentless grip of illness prevailed, claiming the life of this erudite clergyman. The broader ecclesiastical community is left to reflect on the loss of a luminary who bridged intellect and empathy in his service to the divine.
