Co. Limerick Quarter Sessions Unfold: Varied Cases Presented Before the Court

Limerick, Co., Ireland – In a recent session of the County Limerick Quarter Sessions, presided over by the Honourable Judge Law Smith, a diverse array of cases unfolded, drawing attention to both commonplace offences and more unusual legal matters. The proceedings showcased the legal fabric of the region, with a particular focus on larceny, assault, and unique charges under the Irish Marriage Act.

The ordinary charges of larceny and assault were not absent from the docket. Among the accused were Bridget and Michael Hartman, facing charges related to false declarations under the Irish Marriage Act of 1874. This legislation rendered it a criminal offence to provide false declarations to the Registrar, a crucial authority for Catholics seeking to marry within their parish.

The cases at hand were numerous, yet the nature of the charges did not disrupt the overall tranquillity of the county. The Grand Jury found merit in cases against Mary Donoghue for larceny, William Creed for assault, Christopher for wounding, and Bridget and Michael Hartman for making false declarations. Additional cases involved John Merrill for wilful damage, Thomas Welford for swearing, and Patrick Seaman for making false opinions with the intent to defraud, among others.

The charges against Mary Donoghue for larceny revealed an alleged theft from Peter O’Toole. The accused was indicted for stealing a sum of £5, illustrating the variety of cases presented during the session.
