LIMERICK CORPORATION NAVIGATES CONTROVERSY OVER KILTEELY DEMONSTRATION

Limerick, Friday – In a heated session at the Corporation Committees meeting last night, under the mayoral guidance, the city’s officials grappled with a contentious invitation from the Kilteely Demonstration Committee. The committee had sought the participation of Corporation members in their event scheduled for Sunday. The ensuing debate shed light on the underlying tensions within the city’s political landscape.

Alderman MacNeice, proposing and Councillor Johnston seconding, recommended the invitation be acknowledged, allowing interested Corporation members to attend the Kilteely event at their expense. Additionally, they suggested extending an invitation to Mr John Dillon MP.. However, a dissenting voice emerged in the form of Mr P., who vehemently opposed the idea, attributing the discord in the country to Mr Dillon.

In a surprising turn, Mr P. Bourke proposed a complete embargo on Corporation participation, advocating against sending any deputation and refraining from presenting any address to the Kilteely gathering. Mr Michael O’Brien seconded this motion. Mr Dalton added a critical perspective, questioning the Corporation’s consistency in one day rallying behind “God save the King” and the next day chanting “God save Ireland.” A spirited exchange of opinions ensued, but ultimately the motion to engage with the Kilteely event was carried with 12 votes in favour.

Conversely, at the Limerick City Branch of the United Irish League meeting, Alderman MacNeice presiding, a decision was made to present an address to Mr Dillon at Kilteely on Sunday. The branch finalized arrangements for transporting a substantial contingent to the demonstration, anticipating a strong local presence.
