Anticipation Surrounds Sale of Newcastle-West in Limerick Town

LIMERICK — The planned public auction of Newcastle-West, announced for October 12th and subsequent days, has taken an unexpected turn as the owner of house properties, Mr Wm. D. Kitt, an auctioneer in Limerick, decided to advance the sale by a fortnight. The estate’s auction was expected to draw crowds, but the private negotiations have already presented a lively spectacle.

Over the past two days, the offices of Mr Wm. D. Kitt has been bustling with activity as interested parties flocked from Newcastle to engage in private treaty discussions. The animated scenes witnessed indicate a high level of interest, with numerous deals already concluded. As negotiations continue, it wouldn’t be surprising if a significant portion of the town changes hands even before the originally scheduled auction date.

Property prices in the transactions range from 15 to 25 years’ purchase, reflecting the diverse nature of the town’s real estate market. Mr R. Curling, representing the Earl of Devon, was in attendance alongside Mr S. Leahy, the solicitor overseeing the sale, and Mr Robert Cowen, a solicitor representing several tenants in the negotiations.

The announcement of the sale prompted a public outcry, leading to a demonstration against potential competition from external buyers. The Prices Association reports that more than half of the occupiers have already opted for private treaty purchases, and the remaining transactions are expected to be finalized by Saturday. The terms of these agreements typically span from 20 to 25 years’ rent. The sale of Newcastle-West continues to be a focal point of local attention, with implications for the town’s future landscape and its residents.
