Ardfert Diocesan Synod: Bishop Reflects on Progress and Challenges

Tralee, Thursday – The annual meeting of the Synod of Ardfert and Aghadoe took place in the Church Schools, Tralee, where the Lord Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert, and Aghadoe presided over the gathering. In his address to the Synod, the Bishop provided a comprehensive overview of the state of the diocese, addressing various facets of church life, from legal matters to financial reports and personnel changes.

Bishop’s Reflection on the Past Year

Reflecting on the year since the last Synod, the Bishop acknowledged the marked events that had shaped the diocese’s history. He expressed satisfaction with the steady and satisfactory progress observed, a sentiment derived from personal visits and reports from Rural Deans. Emphasizing the challenge of assessing spiritual growth solely through statistics, he stressed the importance of personal engagement to gauge the true state of affairs.

Clerical and Lay Changes

The Bishop noted changes among the clergy, with resignations and appointments reshaping the ecclesiastical landscape. While acknowledging the departure of some members, he expressed gratitude that none were due to death. Among the laymen, the passing of Mr Robert Fitz Gerald was lamented, with the Bishop acknowledging his long-standing commitment to the Church and the parish of Kilgobbin.

Financial Report and Challenges

The financial report presented at the Synod revealed a mixed picture. While the Assessment Fund received fair support, the report highlighted that no further compensation had been received to recoup the losses due to funds being charged with part of the deficit on Bishop Graves’s Commutation Fund. The report also discussed the surplus, interest, and the ongoing challenge of meeting the requirements of the Parochial Aid and General Diocesan Fund.

Education and Missionary Endeavours

The Bishop commended the good work in education, citing the positive results of the Sunday School teaching initiated by Bishop Graves. He also acknowledged the Committee of Missions, indicating that missionary work remained a priority, reflecting the commitment of the diocese to global concerns. The report of the Temperance Committee underscored the collective responsibility of the Christian community in addressing societal issues, with a nod to the efforts of Roman Catholic brethren in this regard.

Looking Ahead

In his address, the Bishop expressed support for the upcoming “Forward Movement” in the Church of England, hoping for unity and collabouration among church members. He urged a continued focus on the Church’s primary goal: building up its members in the likeness of their Divine Master. The Bishop concluded by recognizing the challenges faced by the Church of Ireland, expressing gratitude for the unity prevailing among its members, and urging a steadfast pursuit of the great work entrusted to them.

In summary, the Ardfert Diocesan Synod provided a platform for reflection, discussion, and planning, highlighting both achievements and challenges within the diocese. The Bishop’s address captured the essence of the diocese’s spiritual and practical endeavours, emphasizing the importance of unity, progress, and a steadfast commitment to the Church’s mission.
