REVISED SALMON FISHING SEASON ON THE RIVER SHANNON

Following a thorough inquiry conducted by the Inspectors of Fisheries last summer in Limerick and other key centres. The Fishery Department, with the approval of His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant, has announced a significant alteration to the close season for salmon net fishing in the River Shannon.

Until now, the salmon fishing season officially commenced on the 12th of February and concluded on the 31st of July each year. However, as a result of the inquiries conducted by the Inspectors, a decision has been reached to modify this schedule, and the change is slated to take effect from the opening of the season next spring.

Under the proposed alteration, the salmon fishing season will now commence earlier, starting on the 1st of February, a shift from the traditional start date of the 12th of February. Furthermore, the season will conclude for net fishing at the end of July, not on the 31st of July as was the law heretofore. This adjustment aims to better align with the findings and recommendations resulting from the fisheries’ inspection.

It is important to note that in the upper and fresh waters of the River Shannon, the season will remain unchanged, maintaining the current schedule. This strategic decision recognizes the unique characteristics of these areas and ensures continuity for those engaged in fishing activities in those regions.

Additionally, some minor modifications to the salmon fishing season have been introduced in certain small rivers in Kerry, demonstrating a nuanced approach to address specific regional considerations.

This decision comes on the heels of a public meeting held in Limerick last winter, where there were discussions about the possibility of opening the fishing season even earlier, in January of the following year. However, based on the evidence gathered during the inquiry, the Department has not seen fit to make such a radical change, particularly in consideration of the interests of net fishermen.

The alteration to the close season is poised to have a significant impact on the local fishing community along the River Shannon. Fishermen and stakeholders will need to adjust their practices and plans accordingly in response to the revised schedule. The Department, in collabouration with local authorities, will likely engage in an outreach effort to ensure that all parties are well-informed about the changes and can adapt smoothly to the new regulations.

This adjustment reflects an ongoing commitment to the sustainable management of fisheries resources in the region. By aligning the fishing season more closely with the natural cycles of salmon, authorities aim to strike a balance that supports both the conservation of the species and the livelihoods of those dependent on the river’s bounty.

As the revised season approaches, the fishing community, as well as environmental advocates, will be observing closely to assess the impact of these changes on the salmon population and the broader ecosystem of the River Shannon. The decision reflects a delicate balance between the economic interests of the fishing industry and the imperative to preserve the natural environment for future generations.
