Gratitude Illuminated: Limerick Tenants Honour Father Coleman

In a quaint ceremony at the residence of Mr Lawrence O’Donnell in Glin, Co. Limerick, Father Coleman, the revered clergyman, received a remarkable token of appreciation from tenants who had recently secured their holdings on the Knight of Glin’s estate. The gesture, a poignant expression of thanks, unfolded in the form of an illuminated address, symbolizing the deep gratitude felt towards Father Coleman for his pivotal role in facilitating the land sale.

The event, graced by the presence of Mr John O. Fitzgerald, Chairman of the Committee overseeing the transaction, carried an air of significance. The illuminated address, adorned with a likeness of Reverend Dr O’Dwyer and featuring tracery reminiscent of the Book of Kells, was unveiled. Mr Fitzgerald, visibly pleased to be part of the occasion, conveyed his satisfaction at being associated with such a momentous event.

Reading out the address, Mr O’Donnell spoke of the unexpected tangible manifestation of gratitude. Father Coleman, in response, reflected on the modest beginnings of his efforts on behalf of the parish tenants. He expressed his astonishment at the extent of appreciation reflected in the illuminated address, which he regarded as a lasting memorial to the acknowledgment of his services.

The address, a visually striking tribute, symbolized the intersection of history and gratitude. Its crowning likeness of Reverend Dr O’Dwyer and tracery inspired by the Book of Kells underscored the cultural and historical richness of the region. Father Coleman’s contribution, though initially unanticipated in its impact, emerged as a cornerstone of the tenants’ journey to secure their holdings.

In his address, Father Coleman acknowledged the challenges encountered during the process and reassured the gathering that the community, bound by a shared cause, would spare neither time nor resources in advancing their collective objectives. The clergyman’s unwavering commitment resonated in his words, painting a vivid picture of a community united in purpose.

Mr P. Fitzgerald, echoing the sentiments of many, emphasized the pivotal role Father Coleman played in ensuring the tenants’ benefit from the land sale. “If it had not been for Father Coleman,” he stated emphatically, “the tenants would not have benefited as they had.”

The event also witnessed contributions from other notable figures. Mr Hulhane, along with Messrs. Sullivan and Shea, shared their perspectives, adding layers of communal reflection to the proceedings. The unity of purpose and collective determination in Limerick were evident as each speaker reiterated their commitment to the cause that bound them together.
