St. John’s Ambulance Society Takes Root in Limerick

Limerick, Saturday. In a significant gathering held at the Town Hall, a diverse and sizable assembly convened to initiate the formation of a branch of the St. John’s Ambulance Association in the city. Alderman Dillon presided over the meeting in the absence of the Mayor, who was indisposed. The purpose of the gathering was to take concrete steps towards establishing a local presence for the esteemed St. John’s Ambulance Association.

Mr John McMahon, the Honorary Organizer, conveyed apologies from several prominent citizens who couldn’t attend. Notable figures such as Messrs. W. B. Joyce, B.A.; J. P. Rahilly, D.C.; Ralph Nash, solicitor; A. J. Eakins; R. P. O’Connor; and J. Larkin, among others, passionately addressed the assembly, lending their vocal support to the proposed project.

The meeting resulted in the unanimous adoption of many resolutions. One key resolution declared the urgent establishment of a permanent centre for the first aid movement, under the umbrella of the St. John’s Ambulance Association, within Limerick. This resolution also called for the formation of a representative committee, comprising honourary officers from diverse sections of the community, to oversee the effective management of the centre.

Another pivotal resolution emphasized that the centre would rely on voluntary subscriptions, utilizing these funds to cover expenses, acquire equipment for classes, and fulfil the broader objectives of the first aid movement. Special consideration was given to medical professionals and surgeons, who were encouraged to provide their services gratuitously. The resolution also acknowledged the contributions of associations and organizations that offered their support for training classes or other assistance to further the goals of the initiative.

The final resolution outlined the immediate formation of classes, under the supervision of the centre, catering to men and women employed in local organizations and societies, as well as other citizens interested in receiving instruction.

The election of office bearers saw the Mayor position bestowed upon Mr John McMahon, who assumed the role of Honorary Secretary, while Mr W. J. Halpin took on the responsibility of Honorary Treasurer. A small committee was formed to make arrangements for a forthcoming larger meeting, marking the initial strides towards the establishment of a St. John’s Ambulance Society presence in Limerick.
