A noteworthy and compelling dedication service unfolded at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick recently. The Right Reverend Dr Orpen, Bishop of Limerick and Ardfert, presided over the ceremony in the presence of a substantial congregation. The purpose of the service was to dedicate various gifts and memorials recently presented to the Cathedral, contributing significantly to its aesthetic appeal and adornment.
Among the dedicated additions is the Bishop Banbury Memorial Chapel on the north side. This chapel, adorned with a holy table, church furniture, and ornamental railings, was funded through public subscriptions. It stands as a tribute to the late Bishop Banbury, enhancing the overall visual impact of the venerable Cathedral.
Another memorial highlighted during the service is a splendid stained-glass window comprising three lights. This particular window is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Lmnwv M. Hobson and her sister, Miss Mary J. O’Brien of Corbally, as well as Mr F. Hobson. Additionally, a stained-glass window erected several years ago through public subscription commemorates Mr John M, a revered member of the Cathedral choir for 40 years.
A particularly fine addition, recently installed in the chancel, is a memorial dedicated to the O’Brien family. Crafted from beautifully carved limestone, the memorial occupies the entire breadth of the chancel and serves as a lasting tribute.
At the junction of the transepts, a striking brass lectern is now in place. This lectern, a gift from Lady Cleeve remembering her late husband, Thomas Cleeve, features the figure of an angel with the Bible resting on its wings.
The esteemed clergy in attendance included The Dean, the Chancellor, the Precentor, the Reverend T Abbott, the Succentor, and the Reverend W. Foley, Diocesan Curate. The Bishop delivered the sermon, drawing from St. Matthew VIII. 2, and the service concluded with the Benediction.
The dedication service at St. Mary’s Cathedral was marked by its solemnity and the significance of the memorials and gifts presented, enriching the historical and spiritual tapestry of this venerable place of worship.
