LIMERICK COUNTY COMMITTEE CONSIDERS KERRY COW SCHEME

Limerick, Wednesday – The Limerick County Committee convened to discuss the recommendations of the Sub-Committee appointed to evaluate the Kerry cow scheme aimed at providing milk for labourers in Co. Limerick. The Sub-Committee proposed that an advertisement be issued, inviting labourers in need of milk to submit their names and addresses to the Secretary of the County Committee by February 29, 1912. Additionally, farmers willing to supply labourers with milk from May 1, 1912, to June 30, 1913, at 8 pence per gallon were sought.

During the discussion, Father Curtin recommended a modification to the scheme for cottage prizes, suggesting a shift from the current three prizes per district to eleven prizes. The new structure would include one prize of £1 and ten prizes of 10 shillings each. Father Curtin emphasized the importance of encouraging labourers to cultivate larger areas of their holdings.

A motion was put forth by Father Curtin and seconded by J. L., with other committee members, including Mr G Butler, Mr F.R.G.S. Daly, and Captain W. A. Faucet, in attendance. An amendment was recommended by Father Coleman, seconded by Mr Bennett, proposing that the committee first adopt the recommendations of the Sub-Committee on the Kerry cow scheme before considering Father Curtin’s proposed modification. The unanimous decision favoured the adoption of the Sub-Committee’s recommendations, followed by Father Curtin’s recommended adjustment.
