DECLINE OF SHANNON FISHERIES SPARKS CONCERN AMONG CONSERVATORS

LIMERICK – In a notable development reported by the Limerick Conveyancer today, concerns regarding the state of the Shannon fisheries have come to the fore. Mr W. N. Welply, addressing issues arising from correspondence received from the Department of Agriculture’s Fisheries Branch, raised pertinent questions regarding the viability of securing a grant for the protection of the fisheries. This grant, it appears, is contingent upon the Conservators subscribing as they have in former years.

During the discussion, Mr Mackey brought attention to the condition of the fisheries, echoing recent assertions made by Mr T. E. Keyesregarding their apparent decline, particularly concerning the Shannon. In response, Mr T. Keyes, a local inspector, expressed reservations, suggesting that Mr Keyes assertions may have been exaggerated.

Mr Keyes, however, stood by his earlier remarks, deeming the inspector’s observations as impudent. He maintained that the state of the fisheries in the Shannon had significantly deteriorated, insisting that fishing yields were now merely a fraction of what they were two decades ago, a sentiment supported by his extensive experience in the field.

In light of these concerning observations, Mr Blood-Smyth remarked upon the unfortunate state of affairs. Subsequently, after deliberation, the Conservators made the decision to deploy the patrol boat for extended periods from November to February. This measure is intended to enhance efforts towards the protection of the fisheries, a crucial step in addressing the perceived decline in fish stocks and overall environmental health.

The decision to increase patrols underscores the seriousness with which the Conservators are approaching the issue. The decline of the Shannon fisheries is not only a matter of economic significance but also one that impacts the livelihoods of those dependent on the river for sustenance and recreation.

As discussions continue and measures are implemented to mitigate the decline, stakeholders remain hopeful that concerted efforts will yield positive outcomes in restoring the once-thriving fisheries of the Shannon to their former glory. However, the challenges ahead are considerable, and ongoing vigilance and cooperation will be essential in safeguarding this vital natural resource for future generations.
