Limerick Harbour Board Debates Cement Tender and Addresses River Navigation Concerns

Limerick, Ireland – The Limerick Harbour Board held its fortnightly meeting, presided over by the Mayor, to address several key matters concerning harbour operations. The board members discussed the acceptance of a cement tender, navigational regulations, and various applications from officials.

One significant topic of discussion was the cement tender from the representatives of Mrs. W. G. Peacocke, offering Irish cement at 39s per ton. Some members expressed reservations about accepting this tender, as they believed the cement supplied by Messrs Spaight & Sons at 32s 6d per ton was of better quality. However, the decision ultimately rested with the Harbour Engineer, who would assess the cement’s suitability before finalizing the contract.

Mr Holliday raised concerns about the potential difference in quality and cost between Irish and non-Irish cement. He emphasized the importance of supporting local industries, but only where conditions and quality were comparable. Some members argued that the higher price of Irish cement could be justified to support domestic manufacturing.

The matter was put to a vote, resulting in a tie. The Mayor exercised his casting vote in favour of accepting the tender from Mrs. Peacocke’s representatives, thereby settling the matter.

Other decisions made during the meeting included accepting Mr Twyford’s offer of £50 for the raising of a wreck at Matthew Bridge and awarding the quay coping contract to Mr Thomas Keane.

A letter from the Clyde Shipping Company regarding navigation concerns was read, expressing dissatisfaction with the river lights’ alteration. The company warned the Harbour Board of potential damages if any were to occur due to the change. However, the board secretary, Mr Boyd, confirmed that no damage had been reported.

The meeting also addressed officials’ applications for salary increases, which were referred to a committee for consideration.

Routine business and the reelection of auditors concluded the session.
