PRIEST DROWNED AT BALLYBUNION: INQUEST UNCOVERS HEROIC RESCUE ATTEMPT

On Thursday evening, an inquest was held by Dr Clancy, J.P., Listowel, District Coroner, to investigate the tragic death of the Rev. John Connelly, C.C., Ballingarry, County Limerick, aged 48 years, whose lifeless body was recovered from the sea at Ballybunion earlier that day. Mr G. L. Stack, J.P., was sworn in as the foreman of the jury.

According to the evidence presented, the deceased clergyman had gone for a swim with another clergyman, who was unable to offer assistance due to the rough sea conditions and barely made it ashore himself. However, showing immense bravery, the Rev. Mr Fry, the Rector, fearlessly swam to the aid of the drowning priest, bringing him to the shore. Despite the heroic rescue attempt, all efforts to revive the Rev. Connelly proved futile, and it was evident that life had already departed.

Dr Costelloe, in line with the evidence, declared the cause of death as drowning, leading the jury to return a verdict in accordance with the findings. The tragic incident has left the community mourning the loss of the esteemed clergyman, and the heroic actions of the Rev. Mr Fry have been recognized with admiration and gratitude.
