“Bishop of Limerick Emphasises Value of Education”

The Bishop of Limerick, Rev. Dr Bunbury, conducted the annual prize distribution ceremony for the pupils of Villiers Endowed School in Limerick on Friday evening. The event was attended by a large and fashionable audience, and the bishop’s address highlighted the importance of education and the role of prizes in encouraging intellectual growth.

Dr Bunbury expressed his stance on the practice of awarding prizes in schools. Contrary to the opinion held by some, he believed that prizes had a significant impact in motivating students to develop a thirst for knowledge and an eagerness to learn. He emphasized that while prizes might not always be valued for their monetary worth, they held great value as evidence of hard work, intelligence, and industry. The bishop encouraged his young audience to persevere in their studies, stating that it was often the diligent and industrious individuals who eventually excelled in life.

Reflecting on the curriculum, Dr Bunbury underlined the significance of keeping religious instruction integrated with secular education. He hoped that religion would remain intertwined with learning, acknowledging its role in nurturing well-rounded minds.
