PROPOSAL FOR A MEMORIAL TO JOHN FRANCIS O’DONNELL

To the Editor of The Limerick Echo,

Limerick, April 16th, 1905

Dear Sir,

I kindly request your space in your esteemed newspaper to bring forth a suggestion to the citizens of Limerick, particularly to the members of the Young Ireland Society. This proposal concerns the idea of adorning the house where John Francis O’Donnell was born with a commemorative tablet that would inform both present and future generations of its historical significance.

Limerick, situated by the Shannon, has given birth to many talented individuals who, through their achievements in arts and letters, have immortalized this city. Yet, I am inclined to believe that none of them loved and celebrated the memories, landscapes, and history of Limerick with the same intensity, emotion, and elegance as O’Donnell. Those who have delved into Irish literature are familiar with the vibrant hues in which he portrays the scarce remnants of Limerick’s past. His remarkable poem “The Treaty Stone” and the more stately concept woven into “On the Ramparts” eloquently illustrate this. In the latter, he seamlessly intertwines the historic architecture of Irishtown with the enchanting aura of a bygone era.

Might I hope that this modest suggestion will find resonance and lead to tangible action? Could we not channel our collective pride, discernment, and appreciation towards realizing a fitting memorial? By doing so, we can contribute to the eternal remembrance of someone who cherished his nation and people so deeply and fervently.

Yours sincerely,

P. F. O’M.
