Statistics Highlight Trends in Trade Union Membership and Funding

The recently released report on trade union statistics has ignited discussions about labour practices and workforce dynamics. The report, issued by the Registrar General of Friendly Societies, provides insights into the membership and funds of trade unions across the nation.

At the end of the year 1004, there were 739 trades unions registered, with 646 furnishing returns that showcased a total membership of 1,544,461 individuals. These unions reported an income of £2,485,835 and an expenditure of £2,351,799, resulting in a balance fund of £5,365,934. These figures indicate a 2% decrease in membership compared to the previous year.

While the income showed a noteworthy increase of £46,000, the aggregated funds also saw a growth of over £125,000. However, the figures show a decrease of £275 in accumulated funds compared to the previous year. The data reflects the dynamic nature of trade union membership and financial aspects.

In Ireland, a total of 107 trade union bodies were registered, with 49 providing returns. The registered membership in these unions totaled 9,932, with significant concentrations in counties Antrim (including Belfast) and Dublin. The income reported was £17,038, while expenditures amounted to £18,213. The accumulated funds of these unions reached £17,002, indicating a decrease of £275 compared to the previous year.
