In a sombre announcement, it has been reported that General Sir John McNeale Donnelly, K.C.B., a distinguished figure in the Indian Army, has passed away at the age of seventy-six. The veteran military officer, born in 1830 in Limerick to the late Mr Thomas Donnelly, drew his last breath at his residence in Prince of Wales-terrace, Bray, County Wicklow.
General Donnelly commenced his illustrious career by joining the Medical Service of the Madras Army in July 1856. His journey in the military ranks led him to Burma, where, from 1874 until 1890, he held various significant roles, including Inspector-General of Prisons, Superintendent-General of Vaccination, Sanitary Commissioner, and Governor of the Central Prisons at Rangoon and Moulmein. During this period, he achieved the rank of deputy-surgeon-general in 1885.
The late General played a pivotal role in the Burmese Expedition of 1885-86, overseeing the medical department and earning commendations from the Government of India. In recognition of his dedicated service, he was decorated with the Companionship of the Bath. General Donnelly continued to serve as the principal medical officer to the forces in Burma until 1890, actively participating in the Chin Lushai Expedition of 1890, earning further mentions in despatches.
Following his enduring contributions, General Donnelly was gazetted as surgeon-general with the Government of Madras in 1890. The same year marked his retirement from the Indian Medical Service, concluding a remarkable career that spanned several decades. In a testament to his distinguished service, General Donnelly was conferred the honour of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in June of the previous year.
It is worth noting that the late General’s roots trace back to Limerick, adding a poignant connection to his Irish heritage. His upbringing in Limerick likely shaped the foundation of his character and values as he embarked on a career that saw him ascend to the upper echelons of the Indian Army.
The passing of General Sir John McNeale Donnelly leaves behind a legacy of unwavering dedication and service to the military. His numerous mentions in despatches, decorations, and promotions are a testament to his commitment to duty. As we reflect on the life of this distinguished officer, we acknowledge the significant contributions he made to the Indian Army and express condolences to his family and colleagues during this period of mourning.
