“LIMERICK LAMENTS LOSS OF BELOVED PRIEST”

The community of Ardagh, County Limerick, mourns the passing of Reverend John Holtman, who peacefully departed this life on Sunday at the age of 71, following a period of declining health spanning several months. Rev. Holtman, affectionately known to parishioners as Father Holtman, served faithfully in various capacities throughout his esteemed clerical career.

Initially ordained as a priest, Father Holtman served as a curate in Croagh before ministering in Kilmeedy. His dedication and pastoral care were evident as he guided the parishioners during the illness of the late Very Reverend Dr Downes. Subsequently, he assumed the role of parish priest in Cappagh for a notable seven-year tenure. Approximately thirteen years ago, Father Holtman received the distinguished appointment to the parish of Ardagh, where he served with compassion and diligence until his recent retirement due to declining health.

Despite his retirement, Father Holtman remained deeply cherished by the Ardagh community, where his impact was felt profoundly. His departure leaves a palpable void in the hearts of those he served.

The sombre news of his passing prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance among the residents of Ardagh and beyond. As preparations for his final farewell commence, the community gathers to pay their respects and honour his legacy.

Last evening, the remains of Father Holtman were tenderly transported to Ardagh, where mourners gathered to begin their farewells. Tomorrow, following the Office and High Mass at Ardagh Parish Church at 11 o’clock, the community will come together once more to bid their final farewell to a beloved shepherd of souls.

In reflection of his life and service, Father Holtman’s memory will endure as a beacon of faith, compassion, and selflessness in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. As the community navigates the profound sense of loss, they find solace in the cherished memories and enduring legacy of their beloved priest.

The passing of Reverend John Holtman serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that individuals can have on their communities through a life dedicated to service and faith.
