The “Freeman’s Journal” has received an extraordinary letter written on government notepaper and officially stamped with the Royal Arms. The letter, dated February 28, 1902, is from Galway and refers to “Thramp” Ryan, a member of the detective force who is blind, deaf, and lame. The author claims to have enjoyed a drink with Ryan recently in Limerick, and reports that Ryan is in good spirits and pleased to have helped remove a scoundrel named Sheridan from the force. The letter is signed by “One of the Minions” and instructs the recipient to burn it.
It is unclear whether the letter is some kind of practical joke, but given recent controversial developments in the police force, it could contain some truth. The publication leaves it up to readers to judge its value and solve the mystery.
