Saturday, Abbeyfeale – Yesterday’s gale in West Limerick is being called the most violent ever experienced in the region, leaving a wide path of destruction in its wake. Houses were wrecked or unroofed, and shops and other buildings suffered significant damage.
The storm left streets strewn with debris including fallen chimney stacks, slates, and tiles. In outlying areas, hay storage was also severely impacted, with hay bales being thrown and scattered in all directions. Ornamental trees in the city suffered extensive damage, as did the fine timber in Phoenix Park.
The heavy bell of the Parish Church was affected by the gale. Cross Channel steamers also experienced harrowing passages due to the high winds, which at times reached hurricane force of 90 miles per hour.
The residents and businesses of Abbeyfeale now face a challenging recovery process, with the town and its surrounding districts suffering extensive structural and property damage. This unprecedented storm has left a lasting impact on the West Limerick community.
