St. Patrick’s Day: A National Holiday in Limerick

It is commendable to witness the patriotic spirit of the citizens of Limerick as they embrace St. Patrick’s Day as a general holiday. The deputation of priests and people received a warm response from business owners, who readily agreed to close their premises on the upcoming Thursday. This is exactly how it should be.

Limerick took the lead two years ago in advocating for the proper and dignified observance of the National Festival. Initially, there was some opposition, primarily from a few publicans. However, the members of the Gaelic League were determined and unwavering in their stance, refusing to accept any refusals. The clergy of the city provided strong support to the lay committee in their commendable efforts, and with a resounding call to national pride, the wall of opposition crumbled.

Certainly, concerns were raised about the potential impact on business, but when the day of closure arrived, the losses were found to be more hypothetical than real. The experience of the past two years has proven that it is entirely feasible for Ireland to set aside one day a year as a National Holiday, just as England shuts down its mills and factories for three or four days during Whitsuntide.

Taking everything into consideration, the Gaelic Leaguers of Limerick deserve high praise for their role in bringing about the proper observance of St. Patrick’s Day as a National Holiday.
