It is with profound sorrow that we report the sudden passing of Mr George Culhane, a highly esteemed and deeply mourned resident of West Limerick. The untimely death of this vibrant individual has left a significant void in the hearts of his numerous relatives and friends. Mr Culhane, a true embodiment of the Irish spirit, has evoked a profound sense of grief throughout the community.
The remains of the departed were transported to the Catholic Church at Croagh (Image) on Saturday evening, where they lay in repose overnight. During the Sunday morning Mass, Reverend Father Mulcahy delivered a heartfelt address to the congregation, paying a poignant tribute to Mr Culhane and expressing the solemnity of his sudden passing.
In his emotional sermon, Reverend Mulcahy recounted an encounter he had in the church at three o’clock that Sabbath morning. As the first rays of dawn illuminated the church windows, he witnessed a sombre scene: the coffin containing the lifeless body of someone who, just thirty-six hours prior, possessed the strength of a giant. The eyes that once beheld the wonders of creation were now dimmed, the voice silenced, and the once nimble feet now motionless. Within the hour, the cold embrace of the grave would claim him, leaving him in the hands of his Creator and the mercy of his God.
The reverend’s eloquent words moved many in the congregation, bringing forth tears and heartfelt prayers for the repose of Mr Culhane’s soul. At three o’clock, the remains were taken to the family burial ground at Capps. The extensive procession of carriages and the large number of attendees from the general public served as a testament to the endearing qualities of the departed and the well-recognized popularity of his family and friends, to whom we extend our sincere condolences.
Among the clergy present were Very Reverend M. O’Donnell, UP, of Rathkeale; Reverend W. J. Mulcahy, PP, of Croagh; Reverend John Hallisan, V.C.; Reverend J. Conway, C.C., of Croagh; Reverend J. Murphy, CC; Reverend S. Culhane, CC; Reverend J. Connolly, CC, of Rathkeale.
The chief mourners included Mr Denis Culhane and Mr I. Culhane (brothers), Mrs Scanlon (sister), Reverend Stephen Culhane, CC, Mr Denis Culhane, Mr Patrick V. Culhane, Mr E. J. Culhane, Mr Patrick Fitzgerald, Mr M. Fitzgerald, Mr J. Cahill, Mr P. Cahill, Mr G. Sheehy, Mr I. Sheehy, Mrs Butler, Mrs Hayes, Mrs Madigan, Mrs M. McNamara, Mr W. Casey, Mr K. Powers, and Mr T. B. Naughton (cousins).
The community stands in unity as they mourn the loss of Mr George Culhane, offering their support and deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
