In the realm of promoting Irish language proficiency among the younger generation, inter-school competitions proved to be of great importance. St. John’s Convent Schools in Limerick emerged as the victors in the categories of reading, dictation, recitation, prayers, and conversation for students between the ages of 13 and 16. The success of Mr John O’Connor’s pupils showcased the effectiveness of his teaching methods. For children under the age of 13, Limerick Union National School, under the guidance of Mr Purtell, claimed the first prize. In the Irish conversation category, John Walsh from Leamy’s School in Limerick shared the first prize with Dan Buckley from Milford and Charleville. Among the girls, Ellen Har- pett from Rathkeale secured the top spot in the same subject. Additionally, Elihu Collins from the Convent of Mercy in Abbeyfeale excelled in reciting Irish prose or poetry, while John Donovan from Limerick was recognized for the best preparation of a short story in Irish.
