An important monthly meeting of the West Limerick Executive of the United Irish League was held in Newcastle West on Wednesday, resulting in significant progress. Reverend Father W. Casey, Rector of Allaghaun, presided over the meeting, which was attended by several delegates from various branches.
The delegates in attendance included representatives from Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale, Rathkeale, Askeaton, Ballyagran, Croagh, Coolcappa, and Ashford. Mr Keane acted as the secretary in the absence of Mr W.D. Power.
During the meeting, the appointment of delegates to attend the county committee was discussed. It was decided to refer the matter to Mr Power, allowing him to make a decision in sufficient time. A resolution from the Sarsfield branch in Limerick was also approved, urging Mr W. Costelloe, auctioneer of Rathkeale, not to proceed with the sale of the meadows of the evicted farm at Cappanehane. The resolution expressed disapproval of the sale, considering the ongoing efforts to reach a settlement between the landlord and tenant. It called on Mr Costelloe, as a genuine Nationalist, to respect the wishes of the people.
Several individual cases were considered during the meeting. The case of Noonan and Noonan, represented by Pat Noonan from the Askeaton branch, was discussed. The Chairman informed the attendees that he had received a letter from the other party involved, and it was decided to forward the letter to the Ballingarry branch for further consideration.
The case of Martin Hogan was addressed, and a resolution expressing hope that the tenants on the Fitzgibbon property, who had agreed to purchase their holdings, would stand firmly on the condition of reinstating the evicted tenant, Martin Hogan. The resolution acknowledged the support of the League and its branches in the county for this condition, emphasizing that the tenants’ adherence to it would be highly appreciated.
The Newcastle West branch raised the case of John H. Danaher, urging the tenants on the Goold property, who were in the process of purchasing, to consider Danaher’s situation. It was suggested that the tenants could approach the National Bank and the landlord, requesting them to act fairly towards Danaher. The Chairman expressed his support for this approach, emphasizing the need to find a solution that would provide assistance to Danaher. Mr Thomas Hurley proposed that an allowance in money be sought from the purchasers of the property for Danaher. The Chairman and other attendees agreed with this suggestion.
Other cases, such as that of Clery and Nolan in Ballyanne, were referred to the Coolcappa branch for further review and reporting at the next Executive meeting. The case of Ambrose and McDonnell from the Ardagh branch was referred to the Chairman, Rev. Fr. Casey, Mr Thomas Hurley, and Mr Thomas McDonnell for settlement. The resolution passed by the Kileolman branch regarding the rights of Kennelly to the land in Carrigkyle was also confirmed.
The next Executive meeting was scheduled to take place in Rathkeale on Wednesday, August 10th.
