Dear Sir,
I write to bring attention to an important matter regarding the Limerick Savings Bank. In the coming week, the governors of the bank will be filling a vacant clerkship in their Glentworth Street offices. It may come as a surprise to many that there is not a single Catholic clerk in this office, despite the fact that a significant portion of the bank’s support comes from Catholic depositors. In fact, the proportion of Catholic to non-Catholic funds stands at 9 to 2. Yet, for the past twenty years, not a single Catholic has been appointed to a clerical position within the bank.
There are Catholic governors on the board, and even the Mayor, as an ex-officio member, has a role to play. If they act diligently, they could bring attention to the bigotry and intolerance that have persisted within the bank for years. It is worth noting that last year, this same group refused to allow the advertisement board of a Catholic fete and bazaar to be placed in close proximity to their premises. It is high time that the depositors and the public become aware of these practices.
Yours faithfully, Justice
