Limerick, 21st September – The Limerick Gaelic Athletic Sports, held on Sunday, descended into chaos, casting a shadow over the event. Despite initial arrangements, the proceedings quickly spiralled out of control as the crowd invaded the field, creating an atmosphere unfit for any athletic competition in Ireland. Unfortunately, obtaining accurate details proved impossible, as the Press representatives were unable to acquire a program.
The management of the telegraph board was a farce, often confusing one event with another. For instance, the Two Mile Novices’ Bicycle race was initially announced, only to discover, after the second lap, that it was, in fact, the Three Mile Bicycle Open Race. Efforts to restore order were in vain, and the stewards, including Alderman Daly, faced attacks while attempting to intervene.
The lack of discipline was deeply regrettable, considering that nearly three hundred competitors, including prominent athletes, had registered for the sports. Notable winners included Hegarty from Dublin, securing the Mile Championship of Ireland Walking Race, C. Leahy with a remarkable 6 feet 4½ inches high jump, and McDonagh, also from Dublin, triumphing in the Three Miles Bicycle Open race. Regrettably, precise results for the other events remain elusive.
The secretary of the event mentioned that a request for police assistance in managing the field arrangements was denied, adding to the difficulties faced during the ill-fated sports meet.
