Jurors Told To Leave The Court Immediately

At Limerick Quarter Sessions, a case was brought before Judge Adams and a common county jury where Morgan Power was indicted for assaulting Sergeant Doherty of the Royal Irish Constabulary on the night of 22nd October last. The evidence presented during the trial showed that the prisoner not only assaulted Sergeant Doherty when he was arrested but also attacked another constable, resisted arrest, and caused damage to the police cell floor in a violent manner.

Despite the evidence, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty after a short deliberation. His Honour expressed his disappointment with the verdict, stating that it was in contrast to the sworn evidence presented during the trial. He remarked that he regretted not being able to extend the commendations given to city jurors by the Judge of Assize to the jurors of the County of Limerick, given their decision in this case.

The accused, Morgan Power, was then returned for trial on the charge of assaulting Constable Urcell on the same occasion, and bail was accepted for his appearance in court. Addressing the jurors who had just determined the charge of assault on Sergeant Doherty, Judge Adams discharged them and directed them to leave the court immediately.
