G.A.A. Munster Council Holds Convention – Chairman Re-elected Amid Disputes

On Sunday, the Gaels of Munster gathered for a Convention in Tipperary, seeking to address previous irregularities in the proceedings. The Central Council had declared the previous Convention as irregular and illegal following an appeal by the Cork County Board. Delegates from various counties attended the event.

During the convention, a debate arose over the affiliation of Waterford clubs, leading to a close vote that ultimately recognized the current affiliation of the Waterford County Board.

The outgoing chairman, Mr T.F. O’Sullivan, suggested that delegates focus on holding the new Convention without dwelling on past criticisms of the Central Council’s decision. He urged adherence to the governing body’s actions and highlighted the importance of obeying them.

When it came time to elect the new chairman, a contentious election occurred. Mr William Curtin, representing Cork City, was proposed and seconded, with supporters emphasizing the significance of a Cork representative holding the position. However, Mr O’Sullivan was also nominated, receiving the majority of votes, and graciously thanked those who supported him.

For the treasurer position, Mr D. Fraher was unanimously elected. The secretary position saw a proposal for Mr McGrath’s re-election, but Mr Eugene O’Sullivan from Kerry was also nominated. Mr O’Sullivan later withdrew his name, allowing Mr McGrath to be re-elected unopposed.

The Convention passed several motions, including one proposing a Munster Cup competition between last year’s hurling and football teams to improve the Council’s financial condition. Another motion stressed the importance of punctuality in starting matches and called on referees to enforce this.
