United Irish League Manister Branch Meeting

On Sunday, 19th inst., a well-attended meeting of the United Irish League Manister Branch was held, with Mr C.F. Hartigan, DC, presiding. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and discussed, and particular attention was given to a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Joint Limerick Executives.

The resolution aimed to expedite the distribution of untenanted lands in the county among people seeking opportunities to make a decent living, as many were emigrating due to the lack of available land. Some of these lands were highly fertile but remained unused or let on a harmful eleven-month system. The resolution urged individuals not to take these lands to avoid hindering potential sales to the Estates Commissioners, who would distribute the lands among small farmers and labourers in the area. To ensure the resolution’s implementation, the meeting requested every branch secretary to provide Mr S.P. Harris with the names and addresses of those who had taken grazing land.

The attendees at the Manister Branch meeting wholeheartedly approved of the resolution and decided to supply the required information to Mr Harris, the Honorary Secretary of the East Limerick Executives.

Additionally, the meeting issued a warning to people intending to purchase land under the Wyndham Act, cautioning them about the impending free access of Canadian and other foreign cattle to Ireland. This development could mark the beginning of a series of competitions that the country would face in the next seventy years.

The case of Mr Denis McCarthy, an evicted tenant, was discussed, and the role of Messrs Ebrill Brothers in the sale of his farm was debated extensively. It was agreed to send a letter to Messrs Ebrill Brothers on this matter.

The meeting was adjourned until Sunday, 5th March.

-John McCarthy, Honorary Secretary.
