Captain Shawe-Taylor Appeals for Unity in the Changing Ireland

In response to not being granted a hearing at the recent Dublin Orangemen meeting, Captain Shawe-Taylor shares his views in a letter, calling for a united approach in the evolving landscape of Ireland.

Captain Shawe-Taylor notes that a new spirit of hope, self-confidence, and industrial enterprise is sweeping through Ireland. The ongoing transfer of land from owners to occupiers is easing the historical feud between landlords and tenants, contributing to a more peaceful national atmosphere. Additionally, major cities like Dublin, Cork, Waterford, and Limerick have recently established associations to promote Irish industries and manufacturing.

The Captain acknowledges the admirable qualities of the Orange Democracy, praising their fearlessness, honesty, and industriousness in contributing to the progress of Ulster. However, he earnestly appeals to them to recognize the ongoing revolution in the country and urges them to embrace their Irish identity fully. He encourages the Orange Democracy to play a leading role in the national regeneration of all of Ireland.

Captain Shawe-Taylor’s appeal emphasizes the importance of unity and cooperation among all Irishmen, irrespective of their political affiliations. He believes that by coming together as one nation, they can actively participate in the changing landscape of Ireland and contribute to its overall prosperity and progress.

Dated May 20th, 1905, the Captain’s letter seeks to inspire a shared sense of responsibility and commitment to the future of Ireland, fostering an environment of cooperation and understanding among its people.
