Limerick Evicted Tenants Demand Government Action: Convention Planned

A meeting of the County Limerick Evicted Tenants’ Association was convened at the Town Hall, presided over by Mr John Harry, V.C. The attendees included representatives and members of the association, such as John Moloney, W. Flannery, M. Hogan, M. Power, M. Hickey, J. Dwyer, R. Dunworth, P. Mullins, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Burry, Mrs. Cooney, P. Leahy, P. O’Brien, M. Fenton, M. Hogan, and J. Scanlan.

The meeting focused on securing allotments for the evicted tenants on Mrs. Hester Nevios’ estate in Mountshannon, County Limerick. A resolution was proposed and unanimously passed, urging the Estates Commissioners to provide information about when the approved evicted tenants would receive possession of their allotted lands. Copies of the resolution would be sent to the Estates Commissioners and Mr J.E. Redmond, Chairman of the Irish Parliamentary Party.

Letters from the Estates Commissioners were read during the meeting, indicating that possession of the estate would not be taken until November 1st. Additionally, the Commissioners were unable to confirm the date of allotment of parcels on the estate at present.

The attendees expressed support for Mr Martin Meagher, a lifelong Nationalist, as a candidate for the head of the poll in the Limerick County Council elections.

During the meeting, Mr Moloney voiced his concern about the failure of the Act for the evicted tenants, with only a small percentage reinstated and a minimal amount of funds distributed. He blamed both landlords and the government for the lack of progress, suggesting that they had the means to reinstate many more tenants but chose not to do so.

Mr Moloney advocated for a vigorous agitation under the banner of the United Irish League, calling for immediate and permanent reinstatement of evicted tenants. He believed that the government’s lack of action should be met with a policy of exasperation rather than conciliation.

To coordinate their efforts, the meeting decided to hold a convention of evicted tenants on either June 29th or August 15th. The convention would lay down definitive lines of action and demonstrate the cause of the evicted tenants before the world. The attendees emphasized the importance of unity and energetic action in their pursuit of justice and reinstatement.
