In a highly anticipated showdown at the Markets Field, Lansdowne and Rovers clashed in the Junior Cup Final, captivating a fair gathering of spectators despite the sweltering weather more suitable for cricket than rugby football.
The match, typical of junior football in Limerick, was fiercely contested, with the players enduring the grueling conditions of the scorching sun. It was regrettable that the responsible authorities did not consider postponing the annual competition to more favorable weather conditions.
The game was primarily centered around the forwards, and for most of the match, it lacked any standout moments. However, around ten minutes into the second half, J. Mclaeruey of Lansdowne made a crucial move, seizing the ball from a scrum near Rovers’ lines and passing it out to Nunan, who scored Lansdowne’s first try. Unfortunately, F. O’Sullivan’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
The turning point came when Hartney scored Lansdowne’s second try, completely tilting the game in their favor. Despite Rovers’ brave efforts, they failed to breach their opponent’s defence, and the match concluded with Lansdowne emerging victorious with two tries (6 points) to nil.
The teams displayed impressive skills and determination throughout the match. Lansdowne’s lineup consisted of Sargent (Full), Nunan, O’Sullivan, Keane, Mc:Namara (Threequarters), J. Mclnerney (Captain), and F. O’Sullivan (Halves), supported by Lolvin, Gavin, Murphy, Casey, Hartney, Wright, O’Connell, Galvin, and Mclnerney (Forwards).
Rovers fought valiantly with their lineup comprising J. Quilligan (Full), Foley, Reid, Crowe, and J. Bourke (Threequarters), Power and Jackson (Halves), and Moore, Lynch, Shine, Swart, Waldron, Quilligan, O’Brien, and Bourke (Forwards).
Mr C. McGill from Garryowen F.C. officiated as the referee, ensuring a fair and well-contested match. Lansdowne’s triumph in the face of challenging weather conditions added to the excitement of the Junior Cup Final, leaving fans eager for more thrilling rugby battles in the future.
