Proposed Tramway Lines in Limerick

In an effort to improve transportation and connectivity within the County Borough of Limerick, the East Clare Railway Company Limited, hereinafter referred to as “The Company,” intends to seek authorization for the construction of new tramway lines at the upcoming Summer Assizes. The proposed tramways, along with passing places and crossings, are expected to significantly enhance the city’s transportation infrastructure.

Tramway No. 1 will consist of a single line and passing places, starting from a junction with the Great Southern and Western Railway in the townland of Priorsland. This line will run through various parts of the city, including Carey’s Road, Henry Street South, Edward Street, Colooney Street, Charles Street, St. Alphonsus Street, and the Dock Road. It will terminate at a point near the Limerick Harbour Commissioners’ property.

Tramway No. 1a will be a single line, branching from Tramway No. 1 and extending to the Cork Direct Goods Yard of the Great Southern and Western Railway.

Tramway No. 1b will also be a single line, starting from a junction with Tramway No. 1 at the Dock Road and terminating near the western store within the Dock premises.

Tramway No. 1c will follow the Dock Road, Mount Kennett, The Bishop’s Quay, Howley’s Quay, Harvey’s Quay, Bedford Row, and Henry Street before joining Tramway No. 3 in Sarstield Street.

Tramway No. 2 will be a single line, commencing at O’Connell Avenue (or Military Road) and passing through several streets such as Quinlan Street, Richmond Place, George Street, Patrick Street, Rutland Street, and Bridge Street before reaching Corbally Road.

Tramway No. 3, also a single line, will start in Queen Street and proceed through Baker Place, Glentworth Street Upper, George Street, Sarsfield Street, Sarsfield Bridge, North Strand, North Circular Road, and Ennis Road.

Tramway No. 4 will be a single line, starting from George Street and running through William Street Upper, Newtown Mahon, and Mulgrave Street, eventually reaching the County Borough Boundary.

The proposed tramways will cross various streets, roads, highways, bridges, and docks, necessitating the compulsory purchase of lands or properties. The Company will also seek permission to use electrical, mechanical, horse, or other power for the operation of the tramways.

These developments aim to enhance the city’s transportation system, bringing improved connectivity and convenience to the residents of Limerick. The proposed tramway lines will be a crucial step towards the city’s progress and modernization.
