
The annual championship meeting of the GAA took place in Cork on Sunday, featuring impressive performances and record-breaking feats.
Denis Horgan of Bauteer made headlines by smashing a long-standing record in the 14lb winding throw, previously held since 1858 by Mitchell. Horgan’s throw measured an incredible 59ft 2ins, surpassing Mitchell’s 58ft 2ins. T Phelan from Mullinahone, unfortunately, failed to maintain his record with the 56lbs, which was won by Ludgate of Mallow with a put of 28ft 7ins. Phelan’s throw measured 27ft 10ins, while P Ryan from Pallasgreen recorded 23ft 3ins.
In the 880yds race, J Culbuve from Charleville emerged victorious, edging out McAuliffe from Blarney by one yard with a time of 2min 9 2.5 secs. The 56ibs event saw Phelan, the holder, being defeated by the world’s champion, T F Kiely from Carrick-on-Suir, with throws of 33ft 8ins and 31ft 4ins, respectively.
Other notable results included M F O’Connor from Limerick winning the 100yds race, P Ryan from Pallasgreen excelling in the 16lb hammer event, and O’Connor securing the long distance jump at 23ft 6ins.
Horgan also impressed by clinching the 16lbs shot, his throw measuring 37ft 12ins. J Culhane from Charleville secured the mile Championship by winning in 4 mins 38 secs, with J J McNamara from Tulla in third place.
In the high jump, C Leaby from Charleville cleared the bar at 6ft 1in and retained the championship title. M J Creed from Elwo and J J Burke from Dunmanway tied for second place at 5ft 10ins.
The 440 yards race saw M F O’Connor from Limerick narrowly defeating Butler from Midleton, with both runners clocking 51 secs. D Horgan, the holder, emerged victorious in the 38ibs event with a throw of 34ft 9ins, defeating Bresnahan, Phelan, Ludgate, and Reynolds.
The hurdle race was won by J Bourke from Dunmanway in 16 4.5 secs. The 220 yards open race saw M Lyons from SFA with an 18-yd handicap taking the victory.
In various standing events, M C O’Donoghue, Cork, impressed in the standing three jump event, while C Leahy from Charleville dominated in the standing hop, step, and jump. The four-mile race was won easily by the holder, J J McNamara from Tulla.
D Leary from Fiobarr Club triumphed in the hurling ball raising and striking event, and C Walsh from Carriganima succeeded in the football place kick.
The championship meeting showcased exceptional talent and athleticism, leaving spectators in awe of the athletes’ performances and achievements.
