A meeting of the East Limerick Executive of the United Irish League was held at Ballinvana, near Kilmallock, and chaired by Mr W. Barry. Among the delegates present were representatives from various areas, including Herbertstown, Crecora, Ballinvana, Pallingaddy, Garrienderk, Knocklong, Bailylanders, Kilteely, Caberline, Angleshoro’, Knockaney, Loughgur, Fedamore, and Templebradin.
The main point of discussion was a land dispute involving Mr Power, an evicted tenant from Herbertstown, who claimed that most tenants on the Croker estate had signed purchase agreements without ensuring his reinstatement. A resolution was passed, urging tenants not to proceed with their purchases until Mr Power’s reinstatement was addressed.
Another resolution came from the Knocklong Branch, concerning a case involving Mr Dee and Mr S.P. Harris. It was claimed that Mr Harris had previously stated at a public meeting that an evicted person, no matter how long ago, was entitled to their land. The matter was referred to the East Limerick Executive for discussion.
Mr Harris presented his side of the case, denying any responsibility for Mr Dee’s claim and stating that the land was likely bought and paid for long ago. He suggested leaving the matter to Father Murphy for resolution, but Mr Dee was not satisfied with the proposed settlement.
The meeting then became contentious as some delegates insisted on discussing a resolution related to Mr William O’Brien’s position, calling for him to join the Irish Party and settle differences at a National Convention. However, the chairman refused to accept the resolution without proper notice.
Delegates voiced their frustration, pointing out that resolutions had been passed elsewhere without notice, while others were denied discussion in this meeting. Tempers flared, and a dispute arose over the proper procedure for handling resolutions.
In the end, the matter was adjourned, and the meeting concluded amid tensions and disagreements. The unresolved issues highlighted the need for fair and transparent discussions within the United Irish League and its various branches.
