“Rathkeale Fair Sees Active Demand for Beef and Mutton, Cautious Market for Store Cattle”

Despite a relatively small supply of livestock, the fair at Rathkeale saw a good turnout of buyers from Cork, Limerick, and neighboring counties, along with local vendors. The demand for beef and mutton was quite active, resulting in brisk sales. Springing cows showed a positive trend, indicating a rising market for them. However, the store cattle section experienced slow sales, with a significant portion remaining unsold.

The prices achieved at the fair were as follows: The best quality beef reached 9 shillings and 6 pence per hundredweight, while second-class beef sold at 7 shillings per hundredweight. Mutton was priced at 7 pence per pound, while rough mutton was sold at 6.5 pence per pound. Choice springing cows fetched £81 each, while second-class ones ranged from £12 to £13 each. Store cattle prices varied from £5 to £10 each. High-quality hoggets were in demand and were sold at 50 shillings each. Bulls intended for shipping purposes were priced between £10 and £18.

The lamb market experienced a bit of a slowdown, with lambs being somewhat difficult to sell, priced between 26 and 28 shillings each. A notable buyer at the fair was Mr Hayes from Waterford, who made significant purchases. Messrs Smiddy and Dillon from Cork acquired a considerable number of choice hoggets. Springing cows’ main buyers were Messrs Fitzpatrick, Temple, and Bermingham from Dublin.

Overall, some buyers were cautious due to the disappointment of recent Dublin markets, which affected the general atmosphere at the fair.
