Croom Rural District Council Meeting Highlights

The Croom Rural District Council held its fortnightly meeting with Mr John Coleman, J.P., the Chairman, presiding over the proceedings. Several council members and officials were also present, including Mr J. Hickey, Mr M. Fitzgerald, Mr M. Field, Mr J. Noonan, Mr T. McCarthy, Mr C.F. Hartigan, and Mr E. Coonelly. The clerk, Mr J. Conway, the assistant clerk, Mr Canty, and Mr Carroll, the waster (possibly a misspelling or unclear term), were also in attendance.

Correspondence Discussion:

  1. Collector of Cottage Rents: The Local Government Board sent a communication in response to the Finance Committee’s minutes. They requested that the collector of cottage rents in District No. 1 should deposit all collected rents before the end of each month. The Council decided to address this issue and ensure compliance with the request.
  2. Water Supply at Cloghdoolarty: The Local Government Board requested detailed information about the proposed water supply works at Cloghdoolarty. The Clerk informed the Council that the required information had been provided, and an order to that effect had been issued.
  3. Condition of Labourer’s Cottage: The Local Government Board raised concerns about the condition of a labourer’s cottage occupied by James Carroll. They referred to section 83 of the Landlord and Tenant Law Amendment (Ireland) Act, 1863, stating that it was the Council’s responsibility to maintain the ratepayer’s property in habitable condition. The Council took note of this communication.
  4. Engaging Professional Men for Legal Opposition: The Secretary of Limerick County Council responded to a resolution passed by the Council. The resolution had addressed the possibility of hiring additional professional individuals to oppose claims related to malicious injuries. The response indicated that the matter was not within the Council’s authority to intervene.

The meeting covered various matters of concern to the Croom Rural District Council, ranging from administrative issues to housing conditions and legal proceedings. The Council members and officials discussed the correspondence received and made decisions based on the matters presented.
