Limerick, November 24th, 1905 – The devastating earthquakes in Calabria have captured the world’s attention, and the extent of the tragedy continues to unfold, revealing its horrifying impact. Entire communities and families have been rendered homeless, and the loss of homes and livelihoods has left a vulnerable population without shelter or sustenance, compounded by the harshness of winter. In response, the Bishops of Calabria have issued a heartfelt appeal to the global community for aid, a plea that has been echoed and endorsed by the Holy Father himself.
Following a suggestion made during a District Nursing Association meeting, we, the Presidents of the Council and the Conferences of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, align ourselves with this humanitarian call. We earnestly implore individuals to extend a helping hand to the distressed Italian peasants as they grapple with their dire circumstances. Even a modest contribution from each person, if given promptly, can collectively provide valuable and much-needed relief to those who find themselves homeless and starving.
Kindly consider making donations to any of the undersigned:
- James Quin, President of the Council
- John Dyundon, President of St Joseph’s Conference
- Stephen McCarthy, President of St John’s Conference
- William Lloyd, President of St Michael’s Conference and Honorary Treasurer
- Arthur U’Gorman Lalor, Honorary Secretary
The citizens of Limerick are invited to contribute whatever they can to alleviate the plight of the Calabrian earthquake victims. The collective efforts of a compassionate community can help provide solace to those who are suffering and contribute to their recovery.
