It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mr Patrick O’Grady of Ballinrouga, Ballingarry. He passed away on the morning of Friday, the 6th of August, after a relatively short illness. Despite hopes that his strong constitution would enable him to overcome his ailment, fate had a different outcome in store. Dr H. D. Muldowney of Odellville House, Ballingarry, his medical attendant, initially held out hope for his recovery, but he eventually slipped into a coma and passed away peacefully.
Mr Patrick O’Grady was in his sixtieth year and was highly regarded by those who knew him. His jovial disposition and friendly manner endeared him to many, brightening their days with his wit. His kindness and lively spirit made him a favorite among his friends. Beyond his amiable personality, he was politically active and had shown unwavering loyalty to Ireland during the turbulent period of 1867. His legacy as a patriotic Irishman leaves a proud and honourable record for his children to follow. Mrs. O’Grady, his wife, and her family draw consolation from the popularity and respect Mr O’Grady enjoyed. During his illness, his residence was visited by numerous concerned inquirers.
The local hurling club extends its sympathies to Mr James and P. O’Grady, as well as the rest of their family, as they cope with the loss of their father. The O’Grady brothers were instrumental to the Ballingarry teams. The remains were brought to Slounlgh Church on Sunday evening, followed by a large group of sympathizers and relatives. The coffin was placed before the altar, and on Monday afternoon, it was transferred to the nearby ancient churchyard of Clouncagh for interment.
Mr O’Grady’s family in attendance included his wife, Mrs. O’Grady, and their daughters Katie, Alice, Aomie, and Maria, as well as his sons John, James, and Patrick. A multitude of friends, relatives, and members of the community joined them in their time of sorrow.
As his body was laid to rest, prayers were recited by Rev. Father O’Shaughnessy, Rev. Father Carr, and Rev. S. Culbane. The local community gathered to pay their respects, including members of the hurling club, political figures, and friends.
Mr Patrick O’Grady’s passing is a loss felt deeply by his family and the community at large. May he rest in peace.
