Supporting Religious Education: A Call to Action

Letter from Mr Patrick Vaughan, Chairman County Council:

Kilmurry, Feenagh, February 16th, 1906.

My Lord Bishop,

If you deem it advisable to convene a meeting of the city and county to rally support for the schools where the children of our countrymen in England receive their education, I wish to extend my willingness to offer any assistance within my means. The significance of this matter deeply resonates with us, as many believe that demonstrating unity behind the Irish Parliamentary Party could be instrumental. Should secularism become legally entrenched in English schools, it may later seep into Ireland—a logical progression under the same political influence. Our surest and sole foundation for national advancement, prosperity, and life lies in Home Rule. As we extend our sympathy and backing to our fellow countrymen in England for religious education, we simultaneously establish guiding principles for Irish nationality, fortifying our nation’s future against impending threats. I remain your humble servant,

Patrick Vaughan.

Reply from Most Rev. Dr Edward Dwyer:

The Palace, Corbally, Limerick, February 18th, 1906.

Dear Mr Vaughan,

Your letter, deeply imbued with genuine Catholic sentiments, has moved me profoundly. I extend heartfelt gratitude to God for the faith and piety exhibited by our people, as your letter stands as a remarkable example of such. Your suggestion carries immense value, and I intend to consult with clergy and influential figures in the city and county to determine the most opportune moment to enact it. Presently, I believe it’s wise to await the Government’s introduction of their Bill regarding schools, and consider the English bishops’ assessment of it. In this regard, the bishops bear substantial responsibility, and we must be guided by their direction. If they denounce the Bill as harmful to religious interests in schools, then we shall act accordingly. It’s crucial that our fellow Catholics in England, nearly all of whom are our fellow countrymen, comprehend the formidable support of Catholic Ireland behind them. Meanwhile, we must fervently pray for God’s guidance over our leaders’ decisions and blessings upon the endeavours of those defending our Holy Faith during this critical period. You’ve provided an inspiring initiative worthy of both you and our county, potentially marking the inception of a momentous movement.

With heartfelt appreciation and best wishes for your blessings from God, I remain faithfully yours in Christ,

Edward Thomas,
Bishop of Limerick.

To Patrick Vaughan, Esq., Chairman County Council of Limerick.
